The Sun Hydraulics CBAHRCN (CBAHRCN) is a counterbalance valve designed to manage overrunning loads effectively in hydraulic systems. This valve features a check valve that permits free flow from the directional valve port to the load port, while a direct-acting, pilot-assisted relief valve modulates flow from port to port. It includes pilot assist at port which reduces the relief valve's effective setting based on the pilot ratio. The CBAHRCN is engineered to be set at least 1.3 times the maximum load-induced pressure to ensure reliable operation. This model incorporates Sun’s floating style construction, which minimizes the risk of internal parts binding due to excessive installation torque or variations in cavity/cartridge machining. It is also designed for direct installation into cavities machined into an actuator housing, enhancing protection and circuit stiffness. The CBAHRCN offers two check valve cracking pressures, with a standard setting of 25 psi (1.7 bar), and it ensures positive seals between all ports. For settings adjustment, turning the adjustment clockwise decreases the setting and releases load, with a full clockwise setting of 5000 psi (345 bar). Additionally, backpressure at port adds to the effective relief setting in a ratio determined by both pilot ratio and backpressure magnitude. The counterbalance cartridges are interchangeable across similar frame sizes concerning flow path and cavity dimensions. This model boasts a capacity of 0.2 gpm (0.76 L/min), with factory pressure settings established at 5 in³/min (82 cc/min). Leakage at reseat does not exceed 5 drops/min., ensuring minimal loss and efficient operation. Overall, Sun Hydraulics' CBAHRCN is tailored for applications requiring precise control over hydraulic loads with potential for cavitation concerns or where robust response under varying pressures is necessary. Its design facilitates easy integration and maintenance within hydraulic circuits across various applications.

Counterbalance valves with pilot assist are meant to control an overrunning load. The check valve allows free flow from the directional valve (port 2) to the load (port 1) while a direct-acting, pilot-assisted relief valve controls flow from port 1 to port 2. Pilot assist at port 3 lowers the effective setting of the relief valve at a rate determined by the pilot ratio.
Other names for this valve include motion control valve and over center valve.
- Counterbalance valves should be set at least 1.3 times the maximum load induced pressure.
- Restrictive valves have no relief capacity other than as a thermal relief.
- Turn adjustment clockwise to decrease setting and release load.
- Full clockwise setting is 200 psi (14 bar).
- Backpressure at port 2 adds to the effective relief setting at a ratio of 1 plus the pilot ratio times the backpressure.
- Reseat exceeds 85% of set pressure when the valve is standard set. Settings lower than the standard set pressure may result in lower reseat percentages.
- Sun counterbalance cartridges can be installed directly into a cavity machined in an actuator housing for added protection and improved stiffness in the circuit.
- Two check valve cracking pressures are available. Use the 25 psi (1,7 bar) check unless actuator cavitation is a concern.
- This valve has positive seals between all ports.
- All 3-port counterbalance, load control, and pilot-to-open check cartridges are physically interchangeable (i.e. same flow path, same cavity for a given frame size).
- Incorporates the Sun floating style construction to minimize the possibility of internal parts binding due to excessive installation torque and/or cavity/cartridge machining variations.
