The Sun Hydraulics RDBAFWN (RDBAFWN) is a direct-acting relief cartridge valve designed to protect hydraulic components from pressure transients. It operates by remaining normally closed and begins to open when the pressure at the inlet port reaches the set valve threshold, allowing flow to the tank port and effectively limiting pressure rise. This valve is characterized by its smooth and quiet operation, dirt tolerance, zero leakage, and quick response time of approximately 2 milliseconds. Designed for versatility, it features interchangeable parts with other 2-port relief cartridges except pilot reliefs, allowing for easy integration into existing systems with similar flow paths and cavity sizes. The RDBAFWN can handle a maximum operating pressure of 5000 psi (350 bar) and supports a flow capacity of up to 12 gpm (45 L/min). It is particularly suitable for cross-port relief circuits and load-holding applications. The valve's adjustment screw seals are exposed to system pressure; hence adjustments must be made when the system is depressurized. For optimal performance, it is recommended that users select a spring range where the desired relief setting falls within the mid-to-high range between minimum and maximum pressures. The valve's robust design ensures insensitivity to oil temperature variations and contamination. It incorporates Sun's floating style construction to minimize internal binding due to installation torque or machining variations. Additionally, cartridges configured with EPDM seals are compatible with phosphate ester fluids but may be damaged by petroleum-based substances. The model features specific installation requirements including a hex size of 3/4 inch for the valve body and an internal hex size of 5/32 inch for the adjustment screw, ensuring secure installation with appropriate torque specifications.

Direct-acting relief cartridges are normally closed, pressure-limiting valves used to protect hydraulic components from pressure transients. When the pressure at the inlet (port 1) reaches the valve setting, the valve starts to open to tank (port 2), throttling flow to limit the pressure rise. These valves are smooth and quiet, essentially zero leak, dirt tolerant, immune to silting and are very fast.
- All 2-port relief cartridges (except pilot reliefs) are physically and functionally interchangeable (same flow path, same cavity for a given frame size).
- Will accept maximum pressure at port 2; suitable for use in cross port relief circuits.
- The seals on the adjust screw are exposed to system pressure which means this valve can only be adjusted when the pressure is removed. The setting procedure is; check the setting, remove the pressure, adjust the valve, check the new setting.
- Valve is relatively insensitive to varying oil temperatures and oil borne contamination.
- Select a spring range where the desired relief setting is approximately mid-range to high between the minimum and maximum pressure to ensure maximum valve repeatability.
- Suitable for use in load holding applications.
- Back pressure on the tank port (port 2) is directly additive to the valve setting at a 1:1 ratio.
- Cartridges configured with EPDM seals are for use in systems with phosphate ester fluids. Exposure to petroleum based fluids, greases and lubricants will damage the seals.
- Incorporates the Sun floating style construction to minimize the possibility of internal parts binding due to excessive installation torque and/or cavity/cartridge machining variations.
